What is the purpose of the brown wire on the distributor side of the coil back to the ignition/ light switch??

While the ignition is switched "off" that wire grounds out the distributor side of the coil to prevent the engine from firing from power sent to the coil by the starting bypass terminal on the starter switch.

Bob, Thank you.. That makes perfect cents, who would of thought of a safety switch back in 1957.
