John Deere 40T hydraulic

I just bought a 1953 John Deere 40T. I have no manual yet. I know nothing about the hydraulics on this tractor? Does it have the capability to use a cylinder for a plow or other pull behind hydraulic equipment? One arm works the 3 point, what does the other one do? What is the valve with short handle under the left side of the seat?
Thanks,
Bob

The 40T should have a dual touch-o-matic system on there and it sure sounds like yours does. The right side lever while sitting in the seat should operate the 3 point while the left side lever will operate the "3rd arm" on one of the rock shafts. This arm whould have been connected to the front mount cultivators so you can operate one side independent of the other. I believe it is possible to have a hydraulic control valve on a 40 and hopefully someone else will chime in about that.

I am going to assume the short handle you speak of is the PTO lever to start and stop the PTO.

Call the nice folks at 1-800-522-7448 for the operators and service manuals on CD or hard copy. The parts book is free on the JD web site.
Avoid the cheapo IT manuals. They are best used rolled up to swat flies.
What is the serial number plate info?
The Two Cylinder Club can trace the serial number and send a certificate with all kinds of interesting info.
JR Hobbs wrote " Little Giants" which will explain much about the Dubuque tractors.
Huge good fortune if you found a 40,420,430,320,330,435 or 440 with a complete factory SCV.

Try to find JD SERVICE MANUAL : SM-2013 (5-56)
If you fined the SM MANUAL SM-2013 (5-56) with SECTIONS 10>190 it covers everything in the RUBBER TIRED TRACTOR to the TRACK CRAWLER with all info on the hydraulics

There was a SCV factory option I believe but they may be hard to find. If you have the Dual Touch-Matic there are two seperate rock shafts that can be run as one or as two. the small leaver and a pin in the rock shaft arms have to be in the proper position to make it either 1 or 2 systems. the procedure is to complicated to describe here but the manual described above is available from JD for a small fee and gives a complete discription of how it works and how to operate it.

One big warning is major damage can occur if it is set up wrong and operated.

Yes, there is a hydraulic control attachment.

That is the Touch-O-Matic selector lever. Its operation is discussed on pages 27 and 28.

Take a look at the photo below of "BW" our 1954 Model 40.

Hope this helps.

Thanks everyone! The PTO lever is in front of the seat. The lever on the left side of the seat and mostly under the seat is one I was asking about. I know I need a manual and will get one soon. I see no where to plug in a hydraulic cylinder to operate a plow or disc, etc. I tried to upload some pictures to show what I'm asking about. I believe the valve moved by the lever under the left of the seat is frozen.

I would recommend also checking on ebay before you shell out the big green for where buic always posts.

Easy answer on your question about a remote. your tractor does not have one. They are kinda rare. I must have sold my remote too low as it went in a nano second.

As previously posted, be careful about messing around with the levers until you get the skinny from the manual. All that stuff should be in the operators manual.

Dual rockshaft and no SCV.
Just leave the rockshaft setup in the single mode where one rockshaft lever controls both rockshaft internal cylinders.
The single or dual selector under the seat will swing and depress one pin/valve in and allow the other pin/valve to extend. Often the pin/valve and it's internal spring are stuck and need a tug out.

I ordered and received my operators manual. Reading and setting everything as it explains I still have confusing problems. I took out the pins so the rockshaft lifts will work independent. Setting the Selector lever as it should be, The right lever which should work the outside lift arm (3pt) does nothing? The only way I can lift the 3pt hitch is with the pins in position locking the 2 rockshafts together and using the inside lift arm. Using it this way the 3pt jerks up and down until it is high enough the sway chains are tight and then the engine bogs as it is still trying to lift? Got any ideas?

Yes, it has a dual rock shaft.
In single mode the 3 pt. does nothing. I suspect the mode lever under left side of the seat is not working. When I move the lever the pin does not move. It is not hard to move with my fingers but I suspect the internal working are not moving?
The secondary rock shaft will move but jerks, not a smooth up motion.
I have the operators manual but system does not work like the manual says it should.
Thanks,
Bob

Did you find out what was causing that, my 1958 420 dual touch-o-Matic is jerky too.

You can download - FOR FREE - operator's manuals for 40 series tractors at https://techpubs.deere.com/en-US/Search/Equipment , home of John Deere's AG publications and the phone number buickanddeere gave you.

Put 40 in the model search box. On the left side check the box for the language you prefer, the North America box and the Base Units box. The search. 3 pages should show up. The tractors start on page 2 and continue to page 3. You should have your serial number handy as there are some serial number breaks. Happy hunting.
