48 A Decal location (I give up on searching for these)

I'm using the Mylar set I realized they aren't the most awesome but they work, and that's what had been on my tractor originally and I'm pretty sure it was in original condition when I got it. Though the John Deere Hood decals were in the forward position of my hood rather then centered.

With that out of the way, I have a few decals that I don't have a clue where they go.

I bought this set from Davenport a few years ago http://www.external_link.com/p-1125-mylar-decal-set-for-john-deere-a-tractor-1947-1952.aspx

I don't have a water pump so I know the radiator pressure warning is not needed. I'm not sure if all the others would be correct for my 1948 gas only tractor.

The ones i'm not sure about are as follows.

There is one related to cleaning out the oil filter. I don't know where that goes.

A Be Careful (PTO related Decal)

And a Be careful (speed and braking info). My friend who has a 1950 says his is on a plate that is riveted to the battery box. Mine didn't have that so i'm not sure that was actually on my tractor.

This set didn't appear to come with a decal for the belt pulley. Should there be one?

Thanks for any help, I know this topic has been beat to no end but I have literally looked through searching this forum as well as googling internet and come up with very little.

You'd think there would be some sort of exploded diagram with all the possible decal locations throughout all years.

If yours is in fact a 48 model it should be
in center of hood. This photo i took right
out of the dealer parts catalog.

I think when they changed to one single shifter they also moved the decal forward on hood. Which happened in early 50 model year.

That is an ARTIST RENDITION, not a FILE PHOTO.It is far from 548000 as it has 3 SQUARE holes in PRESSED STEEL frame , NOT at that serial no, and JD should have been 2.5 inches from nose cone SEAM and if you look close it has the SINGLE STICK 6 SPEED so your decaling would be more correct like shown. And they were never FACTORY MY LAR , they were SILK SCREENED.

The "Be Careful" plate was not added to the battery box until late '49 or 50. We have a '49 A my grandpa bought brand new and it never had a plate on the box, nor did it have a "tractor centerline", either. I believe the plate was added at about the same time as the box was changed to include this centerline slot. I will guarantee you a '48 would not have had either. Mike

Although there is no decal related to cleaning the oil filter, there are two decals that relate to the air cleaner.

[i:654c4848f0]5. B 1567 R Donaldson service instructions decal on air cleaner body. Interspersed with United. (see Appendix 2, No. 14.)

14. Part number B 1567 R: Donaldson Air Cleaner; yellow background framed in green.

6. A 2177 R United air cleaner service instructions decal on air cleaner body. Interspersed with Donaldson. (see Appendix 2, No. 10.)

10. Part number A 2177 R: United Air Cleaner; yellow background, black letters. Eagle on top with spread wings.[/i:654c4848f0]

Hope this helps.

Thanks to all for your help thus far. Neither the original battery box nor the replacement one I got (off another 48 ) has holes in it for the plate in the back. So I guess Be Careful (Safe speeds and braking) doesn't go on.

Is "Old John" an original condition tractor?

My kit didn't come with the upper decal of the Air Cleaner assembly. I wonder why? I'll have to see if I can get that separate.

I actually assumed based upon my tractor when i got it that the service every 30 hrs decal went on the upper section. I'm starting to think my tractor may have been re-decaled (maybe on a trade in) since the "John Deere" isn't in the correct spot on the hood.

I had it on the top portion rather then the cup the other night. Luckily yesterday i was able to peel it off and reapply to the cup

So I gather that All I need is the Be Careful (PTO Warning)? Which what I have doesn't appear to be correct either based upon the pictures ......!

Below are two shots of what i have left. Which contains the Oil Filter decal.

This decal stuff is getting discouraging. I bought my Decals long ago When I was buying other parts. I didn't know there were so many options or different sets at the time out there. (Mylar vs Vinyl) I kind of assumed that most places would be carrying the same stuff for those tractors of the generation tractor that I have.

I almost didn't use mine based upon multiple posts that people said not to use the Mylar and get the more expensive and better quality Vinyl. Then I read in a post the Deere had switched to Mylar in 46, and since it appeared that my tractor had mylar on it and most likely had never been restored I went with them anyways. (Not to mention I didn't want to be out 30+ bucks and have to spend 50+ more for vinyl)

The hood and grill decals are ok thus far.... But the rest of them have been a pain. I applied the rolomatic decal and was using my finger nail to press it in to pits of the metal and was able to flake off some of the black....... TALK ABOUT AGRIVATING. Now seeing i'm probably missing correct ones and that others probably aren't even worded right.... good grief.
Here I'm correcting my wife that is helping with the application of these that they are decals and not stickers as she likes to call them. (Trying to make them something a little more special I guess) Now, I'm starting to think they aren't much better then stickers.... LOL

Sorry about the venting

Thanks for your help thus far guys!

Here's hoping my replacement brake linings get here friday since one of the other new ones i bought a while ago had decided to turn to powder the first time i applied the brakes on that side last year. I hope to get this darn thing out and play with it over the holiday weekend.
