G engine identification

Hi, I have a G that is the 224th last one made and I had it at a local antique pull and one person accused me of cheating, that I had a 70 engine in it. I am sure that it is all original, is there any ways of telling the difference for sure on the exterior??

Don't let it bother you. Almost every puller will accuse their competitor of cheating.
Most of the rules state "stock in appearance"

Being that a 70 gas engine is smaller displacement than a G, "cheating" wouldn't gain you much.

The 70 all fuel was very similar to the G, biggest difference probably being the carb.

It defintiely pulls well, and yes there might be some of that "cheating" the competition does to keep up!!

Where does the 70 get the hp gain over the G?? just in the carb arrangement?? Like coonie says its smaller displacment.

I bet hardly a G around that was not modified in some way as the stock HP was not much at all ! JD made gas pistons as does the aftermarket for them but most have had a flat head from an early model stuck on them up get the compression up.

A 70 engine has a smaller cubic inch displacement because the target of 50 h.p. was attained at that displacement. The gain over the G was in compression ratio and better breathing due to the Duplex carburetor. A G could be "enhanced" with over the counter parts authorized by John Deere. I have a G with such a kit. It included higher compression cast pistons, a flat head from an unstyled G, and a gas manifold. A G like this would meet or exceed the power of a 70. His argument is empty, however, as a bored and stroked G can be made to have well in excess of 100 h.p. and look 100% stock from the outside. The "stock appearing" argument that used to be made means nothing. Mike

DAD and I had G to plant with . Bought unstyled head which upon inspection had crack in valve seat area. Rather than repair it we installed aluminum high compression pistons. Power war very good. Compression so good had to open petcocks to start. Sounded like a jet till petcocks closed. Im convinced it had 50 hp or possibly a tad more. Wish dealer would have made options more known as live hyd pump!!
