2550 Trans sump screen - Bad news I think

Last tractor to do maintenance on at the orchard was the 2550. Finally got to it the other day as we rarely use this beast but soon it will be pickin season and the forks on the loader will be needed. Tractor is a MFWD and has a 245 loader on it. Below you will see the sump screen as pulled out. The other two tractors did not look like this at all. I am afraid to ask, but I think those cream colored chunks you see in the picture are clutch material? How concerned should I be?

Also, the trans filter itself was messed up when I took it out. The inside of the filter was bent/crushed in towards the center and the top seal was ripped and half sucked into the transmission housing where there is a port for oil flow. I can only guess this is also not a good thing.

The tractor shifted & steered OK before but the loader performance was a bit lacking. The self leveling kind of worked. I used it for about half an hour so far this year to move some dirt to level the road and it was slow with a bucket load of dirt. I can see why now! It's like a new tractor now with the sump cleaned, new filter and fluid.

Your brakes are coming apart...now would be a good time "Not" to own it...things will get much worse soon....
 
Hyd filter housing had nothing in it at all, but like I said the filter was damaged so I am not sure how much filtering it was doing. I did have to blow out the sump screen area and there were a few pieces of rusty metal in there, flakes, about half the size of a pinky finger nail.
 
I was saying this to the owner of the orchard and they are ammicable to repairing the machine instead of selling. Based on your experience Tim what would be an average cost to fix this? Is it even worth fixing at this point?

This is the only MFWD and loader tractor on the orchard so the owners want to keep it instead of looking at another machine.
 
I know a lot of people on here like these,, but when they start going bad they are near impossible to make dependable after the brakes and other internal problems start, this is a poorly designed system...and as I have said before when they are good they are great..but when the start to go bad they are a nitemare...the fine metal particles end up in the SCV's,the steering and the pumps,,it will get to where when it warms up you will lose your hydraulics,,let it set a bit and they will work for a while,,,you will chase this and that till you want to set it on fire...and I say this with the greatest respect for anyone who owns them...
 
Thanks Tim I really appreciate the honest opinion on this. This tractor will need rear tires soon, has no working lights and some of the idiot light sensors removed. I also noticed the front axle pin has egged out the hole in the front axle support/frame. I think it's time to head down the road on this one.
 
Yes have seen a "few" of those and with apologies to Tim I still will pick them over a lot of other manufacturers utility tractors. The material you have there is brown (brake lining) when it gets to be silver it indicates steel on steel and yes things become terminal then. I have brought a few of them back from that but it means a fair bit of tear down and cleaning.
I have seen the filters fail as you describe and have chased those pieces right up to the inlet elbow at the front pump. By the sounds of the front end though this machine has not had a happy life.
 
For the longest time on this orchard it was a spray tractor with a soft cab, no loader. It sprayed the "steep" parts of the orchard hence the MFWD. Those parts have been not in production for 12-15 years at this point and in that time all it did was shuffle some bins in the fall but there are two other tractors that have 3pt hitch forks which were typically used over this one.
