I don't add R-134A or R12 without hooking up the gauges to both the high and low side to see what is going on. I also use a temp chart to see the low and high side temps parameters. I also clean the condenser first to get good air flow. Usually in the summer I try to get the low side around 25-35 and high side 200 +/_ 20 depending on system and temps. I'm no expert but I suspect being slightly lower on pressures is much better than being on the high side is better for the compressor. If your tractor is blowing cold air then you might want to leave that dog sleep. If you are using one of those cheap Wal Mart pressure/can combo the readings maybe suspect.
