Electronic Ignition For 3010

I thought I might of posted on this topic before but I could not find it so here goes.

My friends 3010 gas quit today. I noted a weak spark at the points so proceeded to replace the condenser. Now I have NO spark. I started looking at the coil and found it was installed backwards polarity. (Yes, I know this tractor has a positive ground.) I did not think this would make much difference but corrected that and put it all back together. When I got power to the points I noted a lot stronger spark and it started and ran as expected. To be honest I am not sure what I fixed, condenser or polarity, but it ran great. Anyway, no question so far.

For a bit I was considering going with an electronic ignition, $125 for the ignition and $50 for the coil. My question is what are your comments/experiences regarding an aftermarket electronic ignition in a farm tractor? Do others have good experiences in general and has anyone had a good or bad experience putting electronic ignition in a 3010?

Thanks.

Paul

Recently ran into a weak spring on a new set of points from Mother Deere for my 4010. Sputtering, backfiring thru the carb, backfiring out the stack, wouldn't pull its own weight in first gear. Chased the problem around twice, even pulled the carb apart and found nothing.
Finally filed up an old set of points and installed them. It ran like a sewing machine. The old set had a much stiffer spring (by feel)
Still running with the old set.....

I have the electronic ignition setup in 3 tractors and have put it in several others for other people. I have never had an issue with them and they all start and run better than they ever did. My 720 LP gave me a fit for the first time in 5 years this spring. Replaced the cap, rotor and plugs and she runs like new again. My personal opinion is that there is nothing wrong with a points system, when they work. The workmanship and materials in the new part of those breaker point systems can be questionable and they have gotten considerably more expensive. It doesn't take long to recoup the money from the electronic system.

I just did a very early 3020 for my neighbor and he is pleased. You will need a different key switch as your tractor uses a 6volt coil and the original switch has a built in resister. The first 3020's below sn 68000 were the same way. I put a new key switch and a push button on for the starter. Tom
