New clutch issues with 4010

Just put a new clutch in 4010 diesel, changed all the bearings & seals also. Start the tractor and try to put in gear, all it will do is surge ahead slightly and grind the gear. What did I miss? Or what am I missing? Any suggestions as to what I do next? Any help would be appreciated.

Did it slide together easily, or is there a chance the lined plate got hung up on the splines and was damaged/warped/deformed?

I suppose it is possible. It went together well until the last 3/4" then bolts started to stiffin. So I unbolted it, things were still lined up, and put bolts in one thread, then pulled it apart, heard a small pop. Started drawing it back together slowly & evenly. It went right together easily. I never forced it to gether either time.

I never draw them together with the bolts - always push them together - That last 3/4 inch is usually the hard part - everything needs to be square while going together - yes I use the bolts, but just to snug up the joint as it goes together - something is warped or bent - I use an old trans shaft to align everything to the pilot bearing before going together. Yes you will need to split again :(

DItto what Ken stated

"Never draw together with bolts". Push together stopping pushing to turn flywheel with a large screwdriver or small prybar then continue pushing until both halves meet.

If tractor was towed and not put in tow position it could have called the top shaft causing this problem.DO not ask me how I know. Lloyd

I have a 4020 here in the shop that a couple young guys tryed to rebuild the engine on themselves,,it didn't go well so the hauled it into me and said to fix what they screwed up.. they put a liner kit in it and didn't time the oil pump when they went together, and of course it wouldn't start,,so it never ran and there was trans oil coming out of the clutch housing (it's a Power Shift and they had the engine out) I asked them if it went together hard they said for a bit then something "Popped" and it went right together,,,they crushed the pilot bearing and broke the front plates of the transmission...Darn it,, they just dropped off the plates and I am going on in for the PTO brake while I am in this deep..."Never" draw them together with the bolts....
