distributor questions

1. It seems I'll need to have the battery connected to "bump" the engine so I can adjust the points. How do I make sure I don't get shocked? I'm scared to death of this.
2. What kind or type of grease do I use on the rub block of the points?
Thanks! kelly in tx

What do you plan on touching that you believe will shock you?

If you need the ignition switch "ON" for the starter to operate on the machine you are working on, you can disconnect the wire from the switch to the coil and tape it up so it can't touch ground and short, and the ignition system will be completely disabled.

If it has a "starting bypass, there will be two wires on the ignition switch side of the coil. Remove and tape BOTH of them.

Or, simply securely ground the high-tension lead from the coil.

As to point cam grease, it's still available though auto supply stores or hot-rod suppliers. Or, high-temp wheel bearing grease is a reasonable substitute.

Unless you remove the spark plugs so theres no compression, its very difficult to turn or crank or bump the engine to where the points are max full open on the highest lobe position of the distributor cam, cuz that's when a piston is close to top dead center. REMOVE THE PLUGS then engine is easier to crank over by hand or crank or a fan belt or other methods.

HAVE IGNITION SWITCH OFF that way there's no coil or points voltage. Turn the engine by a crank or hand or a fan belt WITH PLUGS REMOVED so theres no compression making it easier to turn and easier to stop at a pistons top dead center TDC
