1964 4020 Diesel

I'm looking at purchasing one to replace my 3010 (the PTO 540/1000 RPM "pin" problem - and hay needs to be cut now!).

Are there any problems common to the early 4020s? Suggestions on what to look for? It does have a Hiniker heated cab, tank heater, left side battery box modification (which appears to be very... stout). Photos look pretty good, so I'll drive out tomorrow to look at it.

I use it mostly for haying, and a 7' snowblower (Minnesota winters).

Price looks consistent with others on the internet, but if you can give me an idea what it should be, I'd appreciate that also.

Thanks in advance for any responses.

We have a 65 model , great tractor. Has
been overhauled once in 11,700 hrs. Power
shift trans has never been opened up. Its
the main haying tractor.

I have had three previous 4020 power shift's and have one now and bargaining for another if that says anything. I have had one synchrorange and it gave me trans trouble. Never had any problems with a powershift. The one I have and the one I am trying to buy are both 1966 models. The present one was originally a gas and I put in a 4430 engine a couple of years ago. It is a great tractor. I use it for hay, mowing raking, baling with a square baler. It also has a narrow front which I like. The one I am trying to get is a wide front with a 158 loader on it for moving round bales. The most versatile tractor ever made, I think.

I don't know if the 64 will have diff lock which is nice.More than likely it has been O.H.and most have been converted to 12 volt so it gets down to condition, past maintenance, and tires .The cab will be noisy and warm.Price is all over from $4K to $10K.I prefer the 69/72 due to some improvements but they are higher priced.Still one of the best models produced and are what propelled JD to the lead.51 years is a long time to still be going and I would doubt if the new ones last that long.

A 64 will have some differences from the rest of the early 4020 years: no differential lock, different fuel injectors, different wiring to name a few. If memory serves, there were some running changes made to
the PTO brake on power shift models, too. 64 and 65 will also have the oil bath air cleaner.

They are very good tractors, and while many like the later console models better, the early 4020s were the true sales leaders. Deere advertising in 72 called the 4020 a "classic", mostly because the early
ones were winners from the beginning.

Well, I took the plunge. Less than 4000 hrs, two owners, 12 v conversion, new injection pump, some wiring redone, new fuel tank tubing, new fan coupling - pretty clean. Shift lever is nice and tight (unlike my 3010). Brake pedals are quite loose (rattles on shaft), battery boxes nearly eaten through (they will replace them), and pretty decent rubber - and will deliver.

They estimated $1100 to split my 3010 and fix the PTO pin. Might have to take them up on that, as I do not have the equipment (or shop space - plus I thought it would be a lot more)!

Thanks for the advice!

It'll be a good tractor. Something to be aware of tho... there are very, very few with less than 4000 hours. Keep in mind, it is 50+ years old. At 4000 hours, that's only 80 a year. It is likely somewhere
along the way the tach got switched. That's OK. What counts is what kind of shape it is in, not the hours.

Good luck with it!

If I was going to split a 3010/4010 to R&R the tiny pto shift I would convert it to "540 only" which I have performed on several tractors.

I would fix your 3010 for half that amount and be very happy. The only parts are the pin,two gaskets and a front pto seal.It is not even a full days work but dealers do have more overhead expenses than my little shop. Tom

Now, if we could only resolve the transport issues, I'd be happy to have you do this.

:)

If anyone knows of a shop in the St. Cloud-Minneapolis corridor that can do this. please respond. Thanks!
