We sprayed with brake cleaner and that freed up the plate and all worked good for about 15 under no load just sitting still running in yard. Then the grinding came back when trying to get in gear. Is this just a clutch adjustment, or something else we should be looking at. Thanks

I had a 2240 ? that acted like that. Was low houred and clutch was adjusted fine. Assuming clutch is still good you could try what I did. After the brake clean dries put it in HIGH gear then full or close to it throttle hold the brakes then let the clutch out it will slip. Don't do it too long or it will burn it up but sometimes just enough will help clean them up. You will have to split it anyhow if it doesn't help ? Our 4020 it didn't help it had to split it, but it did on that other one.

Have you watched the operation of the linkage and throwout bearing? Is the clutch properly set up and adjusted ?
The operator's manual shows the free play adjustment. the service manual has the info for proper setup. 1-800-522-7448
Has somebody been into the clutch previously to replace components?
While not connected to the clutch situation. Has anybody checked the corrosion inhibitor in the engine coolant? You don't want a tractor with clutch problems and leaking wet sleeves.
