4020 Questions

First time working on 4020s. Trying to learn as much as I can about them since there are 3 of them on the farm and none of them are running.

A little History,

One is a 69 with a busted rear housing and bad injection pump (cb style pump). The other is a 67 where engine just spun a bearing. During hay season last year the 67 injection pump went out, so they had it rebuilt. The rebuilt pump leaked diesel into the oil and the engine eventually seized up (temporarily). New pump installed and oil changed. It was ran like that until it spun a bearing. Pulled it apart and the crank is scored enough it needs to be turned.

I am thinking there are possibly two ways I can go with getting one into usable shape but I need some info/suggestions.

1st. overhaul the 67, have the crank turned, and reinstall. The only thing I don't know about doing this is if the block was damaged when it seized. Or if it even could have been. (This also seems to be a considerably more expensive option)

2nd. Pull the front half of the 69 and put it on the back half of the 67. (If this does work I have several other questions)

Since the 67 and 69 are "early" and "late" model 4020s will the engine mount the older back half?

Are there differences in the external dimensions of the blocks? I see the hole and mounting for the injection pumps are different but not sure of what else.

The clutch housings and engine will interchange on both early & late model 4020's

Excellent!
A few questions on this swap.

-Are the clutches themselves interchangeable? Just wondering because of the different styles of PTO engagement.

-I read on here about changing the cb injection pumps to the db and found the mount for it (AR69420).Can I use the pump from the 67? I believe I need a different shaft but cannot find it without the pump as well (AR69412). It was also mentioned different fuel lines were needed but would the ones that came on the 67 db pump work?

-Are the 12v and 24v starters the same size and fitment?

A problem that I see is shutting off the engine, you'd have to change the key switch from the '69 to the '67 frame to shut the fuel off at the injector pump. '67 is a manual shutoff where the '69 should be electric shutoff.

The clutches are the same. Starters fit the same. Use the 12 volt starter and convert the rest of the wiring on the tractor to 12 volt. Not much to it and gets rid of all of the 24 volt issues. Dieseltech addressed the pump issues.

Thanks for the info. Just wanted to figure out what all was possible before I split another tractor.

Just found this about getting the small hole/old style DB pump to fit.

Looks like tomorrow is gonna be a busy day! Thanks again

You say that you have a cracked housing is it the rear axel housing or the trans case. if it is axel housing get one from scraper yard and fix it quicker than switching front and backs and you will keep better resale on the tractors

I believe it is the trans case. when the tractor was split and put back together before they forced it and it broke the housing where the transmission pump mounts.

Forgot to mention it before but not really worried too much about the 69 because it doesn't have a 3 point and that's mainly what I need. I may search around like you said and find what I need to fix it for a winter project.
