Coolant testing - I've got issues!

Ok tested the 2555, 2550 and 2440 today with
coolant test strips as recommended. All have great
freeze points however I got whacked out results on
molybdate and nitrite. Molybdate showed a low
reading on the scale with the kit. Nitrite didn't even
turn a color that was on the scale. I was stumped.
Then I looked up and saw two open jugs of Napa
plain Jane gold ol green antifreeze on the back wall
of the shop. Yup, there be regular automotive
antifreeze on these three tractors. How concerned
should I be and how quickly do I need to change
this?

I would drain it and flush the systems. Refill with diesel rated coolant, test on an annual basis and add coolant additive as needed, $100 in antifreeze now... or $1000+ per overhaul later

NAPA sells bottles of the additives for about $20. Truckers use it for replenishing since the engines get so many miles each year. I have a bottle to use when the coolant filter I use on my Taurus doesn't have it. Nothing wrong with their plain old antifreeze either. Back when I was at the Deere dealership that's all we used.

Still need to change the antifreeze every three to five years. JMO

Thanks M-Man. The 2555 manual says change it every two years and I am sure it hasn't been changed in years. I plan on flushing and putting in Amsoil diesel specific coolant which has the additive in it and meets or exceeds JD specs. Local JD dealer actually recommended that. Said it is the only non-JD fluid they sell/recommend. Luckily I have a family who is a dealer.

You have to add the DCA or SCA (depending on company) additive to new antifreeze and it likely was not added.

How did you make out with the non running one ?

I have not had a chance to look at the 2240 yet beyond making sure the key from the 2440 works in the ignition which it does. I also dragged the battery charger over to it but thats about it. The grass has started growing here with the bit of rain we have been getting finally so I have been working on mowing and getting all that equipment in good working order. I also grow a few acres of veggies and pumpkins and it is time to get that all planted as well. Up at 4 and back to bed at 10... that's what farming is about right?
