Road trip continues

Well I'm settled in here at Rapid City, the terain of South Dakota changed a "lot" when I crossed the Missouri River.. We stopped at the little tractor musuem near Kimball, it was worth the stop, then we stopped at the Pioneer Auto show at Murdo,a lot of stuff but not worth the stop. Some construction going on here and there on 90, but the 80 MPH speed limit let us eat up some road, I managed to over-ride my passenger seat Governor...I'm going to do some things around here for a couple days then head towards home on 80 to Omaha, then down to 70

Tim, Made some comments on what I thought was good to see on your old thread, just want to add that I felt the day trip out to Devil's Tower was worth the time. Truly quite a site and neat history how it was formed. Plus the Park Ranger keeping everyone clear of the baby rattlesnake was pretty cool. I'd never been around a rattler, although this one was only about a foot long.

Yes John I took some notes from your post,, I don't care much for snakes,,but I want to see these things. This is my first time out in this area..sure a lot different from Ohio...

I'm hoping to retire in about 2 1/2 years and taking a trip out through the Dakotas and yellow stone cal Oregon n Washington but that might just be a dream with the way health ins is going hope you have a safe trip did you make it to Toronto n see our buddy you met in Springfield last year

If you liked the tractor museum at Kimball, be sure to stop at Farmall Land. It is off of the Avoca Iowa exit on I80, East of Omaha about 20 miles. It is worth the stop even if the wrong color. It is not a tourist trap just a great collection of restored Farmall tractors and other items. If not open there is a number on the door and they will open if available.

I will try to work that in on the way home. The one at Kimball had 3 Ladys taking care of it, no tourist trap,,just a nice collection in near new buildings,,far nicer than the mess at Murdo... It's raining here this morning, I will probably do some windshield looking as soon as I can get this City wife of mine outa bed...I'm use to getting out and going in the mornings,,even if I don't have cows to milk...

Tim, I'm the same way as you, when we crossed the Missouri river on I-90, the landscape really changed, east of the river it was a lot like home, west of the river drier more grass. Let me know when you get headed toward Omaha, if it works out we'll meet you for lunch or dinner. Honestly can't guarantee anything, we're still trying to get the beans planted, raining here this morning. Not near as bad as Texas just keeping things too wet to go.

I saw some planting going on west in SD,,and nothing very tall was up, the crops back in Ohio are ahead by a lot, but we are a bit farther south that changes the game..about every one was done last week around home, but there are a lot of STO's (Small time Operators) there, 1000 to 3500 acres.

Welcome to SD Tim. I hope your stay is very enjoyable! My favorite part of the Black Hills is Spearfish Canyon, if you have the time it is a very pretty drive going either direction. I sent you an email with another off the path stop, hope to hear from you!

I've only been there 1 time 5 years ago, a lot of folks from around here spend their summer vacations there, it's not very far from here, we're about 200 miles SE of Sioux Falls. My sister and BIL go to Sturgis every year for Bike week. Personally I'm partial to Colorado, I enjoy skiing and used to spend some time hiking in the summer, gonna' try and do more hiking. We're getting farther away from Denver every year, found a great place to ski last winter way away from the crowds, Seemed to be folks about our age not so many young crazies. We went around more people than went around us, LOL. We're going out that way this summer to enjoy the scenery and get away from the allergies I have in Iowa. Hope your trip is all that you hoped for.

Tim, if time allows, in Spearfish the D.C. Booth fish hatchery is worth a stop. Quite a bit to see and do in the Black Hills. Drive carefully.

Mike

Passenger seat governors sometimes give you trouble, but they're are there to keep you out of trouble. Have fun! Been out were you are doing those "stores". By the way thanks for the info on the 4440 , she pulls it nice!

Yesterday turned out better than I exspected, the rain stopped about noon. I drove up to Strugus, looked around there some, Bike week must be a big deal, and this year will be the 75th one so they are expecting a "bigger" deal. The Full Throttle Saloon was a sight, that guy has a racket going there. I drove on up and visisted with Nick Uherka ( a fellow YT'er) He has a very nice place there, with 250 cow/calf herd and plenty of room for them. I had more questions than a final exam for him, and more too when I get to talk to him again. It's realy nice to be able to compare how we all deal with farming and ranching in the different states. We all have different methods and a whole different set of problems, and wheather issues. After spending a few hours with Nick we drove up to Devils Tower, my city wife got a kick out of seeing the Prairy dogs there. We then went down and did the Canyon drive and eat supper in Deadwood, final got back to our room at 10PM..Today we are going to Mt. Rushmore and that area, the weather has been nice and cool here 40 last nite...

Well I did the Mt Rushmore trip, the Custer Park thing,,and a lot of other driving around,,I'm back to my room worn out,, feel like I have been baling hay all day...

Glad to hear you're seeing the sights in the Black Hills Tim. Devils tower was a good one. Spearfish Canyon is beautiful too. Used to take my wife there quite a bit when we were dating. ;)

Wish I'd have known you were making the loop today, I was in Belle Fourche working on a tractor for a friend. Too bad I missed ya!

You've gotten to see this area in about as good of condition as you'll ever see it, moisture wise. I know we are WAY over average for rainfall in the last month. If you go south of the hills they've got water everywhere right now.

This area gets much browner on an average year, especially if you west or north of the Hills.

Happy Trails!

Yes I was kinda impressed with the way the grass looked.. Looks like I am going back to Murdo and Down 83 to Thedford, I am going to drop off a valve to Brent Macintosh, then on to Grand Island on 2,, I just calculated that I am near 1300 miles from the shop,, looks like I could be home by Tue. I have driven over 2200 Miles so far..

Tim will you be taking I-70 back home? If was wanting to know if you could swing by when you get to Indiana. The steering valve that I had you rebuilt is leaking an I'm having trouble finding where the leak is. The tractor is setting not even 1,000 ft off of 70 at exit 23 on i70.

Well I made it back here to the shop, that was a big trip,, I drove 3484 miles and got 24.1 MPG, with 62 hours of driving time, a 9 day trip, I took a lot of pictures and notes,,tomorrow I will sort them out and post some of them,,

(quoted from post at 09:43:25 05/29/15) I made it up there but I didn't meet up with him,,he was an Ornery Cuss...

What is his name? I may know him and am at least within 100 or so miles.

I can't think of his name right now he was an over the road trucker, and farmed a little, we met him at the Springfield Ohio show last year, he was picking up an old Deere baler, a 114 I think.
