Correct JD plow for Unstyled A

Don't know when the #51 and 52 came out but they are shown in the '41-'42 JD pocket ledger.
I have pulled a #52 with my '36 A and it did great.

My Dad bought his '36 A new in 1937, and bought a #52 2/16 plow to go with it.
I can't ask him any questions about it as he has been gone 16 yrs now.

A 4A would be right for an open fan A. The 52 or 4B with an open clutch would would also be right for unstyled tractors. The 4B is a stronger plow with a little more clearance.

It will probably vary by region and by preference but in this area an "A" would have typically been purchased with a No. 4 plow of some type as the tractor and plow would have been for more heavy duty use. A "B" tractor or smaller likely would have been put with the 51 or 52 plow for lighter duty use. Mike

Mike,

You're right on about the plow sizes. We got a new 'B' on steel and a No. 51 1-16" plow in 1943. After the war, and when the "Cyclone" engine came out, we had the engine upgraded on the 'B' and put rubber on it and got a 2-12" No. 52 plow. Also added 5th and 6th gears.

As others have already stated the A and a 4 (of one style or another) goes well. Here in West Central Ohio the Antique plowmen & contest people really like the 4B!

This was my '37 and # 4B plow with enclosed clutch. Technically the enclosed clutch came out a little after the '37 tractor did but it's a better plow and the clutch guts are usually still in-tact and working because of internal lube being sealed in and dirt out. Pulled it great in 2nd and it plowed great. Wish I could have kept it.

So does it go like this: a 4A plow doesn't have an enclosed clutch and a 4B does? Anybody have a range of years for the 4B?

Is the 4A and 4B a 2x16"?

made from '35-'49. '40 and newer had enclosed clutch. They all came in 12"-14" and 16" bottoms. The "A" or just #4 plow was the earliest and had open clutch. The B/C and D were all similar but options like coverboards, moldboard extensions, two styles of rolling landsides and hitch options all decided which letter it was. There was even a rubber tire option. Only way you will know exactly what you are looking at would be to get a manual with Pt#,s etc in it and compare. How much do you think a plow that old has been farmer altered through the years?I've got an original manual for one if you end up needing it.($30)My e-mail is open on clasic view.

Was that 2 HI or 2 LOW you plowed in with your JD A and 4B plow?

What was the size of the plow? 2x14s?

I see in the picture that you have the tractor hitch a bit to the right off center. This was done to line up the right plow wheel with the right rear tractor tire?

Is that easier than moving the plow hitch over to the left so many holes as to move the actual plow right? Isn't the latter more ideal?

I'm not a plow expert and am just curious. I have a '37 A and will be doing some plowing with it for the first time this weekend. I will be using an old farmall steel wheel 2 bottom plow, probably 2x12s.

I have a video of the tractor on you tube under "original hood 1937 John Deere A."
