reviews on 5303

My grandfather bought a 5403 last year. Supposed to be rated at 76 horsepower, but it is so light wagons of hay or anything heavy push it all over the place, even the bush hog would make the front wheels come off the ground. Then with 151 hours on it I was raking hay and it blew up, sent a connecting rod through both sides of the block smashing everything in sight. Deere obviously replaced it free but when it came back something was wired wrong and it would not charge. Ours also did not come with rear lights or rear hydraulics so it wasnt much help around the farm.

I bought a new 5303 last spring, 64 hp 2wd with quick tach loader, I had fluid put in the rear tires and 3 weights on the front. Runs the 7ft disk mower just fine, independent pto works great on the 69 new holland baler, only trouble I've had was a fuel leak at the tank, and the only complaint I have is its got 9 gears, but most are too fast. But for the money its a great mid size tractor.

We got a new 5303 MFWD with loader last spring. It's as good as any other John Deere tractor we have now as we haven't had any problems. They are a nice handy light little tractor. We also have a 6000 series with loader, a 7000, (2)8000's and a 9000 series tractors. THE 6000'S are a LOT more tractor but not everyone needs that. The 5000's are really only 45-50 hp class of tractors regardless of what JD says. If you need a 75 hp tractor you should get a 6000 series. It all depends what you plan on using it for. No matter what you decide don't even consider anything without MFWD.

We have a 5203 at our shop (2006MY) that we use daily. Handy little tractor. No complaints to this point. We average 500hr per year on this unit. Just change the fluids at regular intervals, grease it and go. Maybe a little loud @ WOT but you cant have everything. If you do purchase one, get it with rear remote hyd. Not much you can do without them. Just my 2c

I bought a 5303 2wd last December, with single rear remote. Not a full time farmer, just cut, rake and bale my own hay in round bales. I use it with a JD 1217 Mower Conditioner, a JD 3pt rake and a Hesston 530 small round baler.

No front loader yet, but I plan on it someday. It's been a great tractor for me.

I bought a used 5303 from a dealer last week with 71 hours on it and was brushing today and the EXACT same thing happened to me. Both sides blew. I know your post is old but did JD say what went wrong? Mine was just serviced by the dealer and was running just fine. I was cutting on flat ground at 2300 rpm when it happened - was using an mx6 cutter.
