JD A hydraulics

I currently have in my possession a 1951 John Deere A with the power trol hydraulics. When i went to fill the unit up with oil, i seen oil come out of the pto shaft, i have the seal out and ready to go get a new one. but my question is this, is the oil i put in all the way at the top of the unit by the driver seat suppose to make it that far down to the PTO shaft? i thought the power trol was a separate part of the machine and had its own oil supply. please excuse me from the novice questions, completely new to the JD game here.

Thanks for the quick reply. The seal I got our was aa2296r. Is the inside seal hard to get out or does it require me to take the pump off and take it apart?

The inside is a different type seal. You have to remove the whole assy to replace it. If it doesn't leak to or from the final drive I would let it go. Ron Mn

AA2296R was originally a double-lip seal. When you get one from Deere now you get 2 single-lip seals in one box. Deere price is about $20 plus shipping if you don't order it on a dealer stock order.

The same seal is available at any good auto parts house. One number is a Chicago Rawhide #13602. Just get 2 of them.

Check the pto shaft for a groove worn by the old seal. Position the new seals to stay away from the groove.

Do you understand the purpose of having 2 seals on the shaft and how they should be oriented when installed?

Thank you for the part number. I'm not sure why they used a double lip seal on one side of the pot shaft. I can see why they use a seal on each side of the shaft. To keep the oil from goin into the read end housing. As for which way the seal has to be installed, the lip should face away from the tractor. I did check the pot shaft for wear after I pulled the seal and so far I tr s not bad. There is no deep groove worn in it.

One lip keeps oil in the pump and the other lip keeps the pump from sucking air into the pump.
The first seal you press into the housing should have the garter spring facing "away" from the pump. The second seal should have the garter spring facing "toward" the pump. Put a small amount of grease between the seals before you install the second seal.

Called napa auto parts today and seals will be in tomorrow. Would sae 30 weight non detergent oil be ok to use in the power trol system?

Had them draining since last weekend to make sure I get all the good stuff out. Lots of coffee looking oil and sludge. Gonna do a kerosene wash on it today. Poor girl needs a little love
