40C questions

I am going to look in a couple of days at a 40C that the owner had running again today but he says it seems to need steering clutch work. He says it rolls freely but does not get power to one side. It has a loader frame that I think may be a Wagner with a push blade on it, a ROPS of some sort and a winch on the back and comes with the service manual. The owner is interested in trading it for a canoe I made last summer which I have had up for sale for $1000. I know crawlers can be money pits. I am hoping to use this crawler in the woods here, but if I find out that it needs more work than is feasible I think I should be able to part it out and get my money out of it. I would be very grateful for any advice on what to look for when I go to look at it or whether this seems like a reasonable deal. I am new to John Deere and crawlers but this one looks like it could be a handy thing and it is only 5 or 6 miles away so the hauling will be cheap. Thank you very much for taking time to read this.

The 40C is the big brother of the MC and the little brother of the 420 & 430C's. It looks from the pictures that this is a 3 roller 40 C which if I remember right will make it early on in production. I believe you could get the 40C in a 4 roller near the end of production. The model 40 was only around a few years but many parts from the M series and then the 420 series are interchangable. Drive it if you can of course and listen for grinding in the transmission and final drives. The engines are a vertical 2 cylinder with a distributor and are fairly simple to work on. If it has the origincal carb it will be a Marvel Schebler TSX-530 however a TSX-245 should also work. For $1,000 I may take a chance. The sheet metal alone, if in good shape, may bring you close to your investment if you were to part it out.

Thank you very much. I am hoping to go and look at it tonight and I will post back once I have seen it in person.

We used to have one. Was a darn good little workhorse. I still have the original operators manual for it , if you end up buying the 40C and need one. . .
