Leaky PTO shaft 4650

Is it much of a job to replace the PTO shaft seal on a 4650? Mine is marking its spot on the floor a little more all the time so sometime the inevitable will have to be done. I don't use the PTO but it must have seen a fair amount of use by the previous owner.

Changing seal appears to be rather easy. Nose frt end of tractor in a ditch or drain hyd oil.

I changed the rear PTO seal on my quad range 4640 by draining the hydraulic oil and removing the cap screws around where the shaft goes into the rear end case. With the cap screws out, the whole shaft pulls straight out the back. Then I took out the snap ring holding the quill onto the shaft, and slid it off to replace the seal. There is also a bearing in that rear housing (mine was fine so I elected not to replace it with the "Made in China" bearing Deere sold me). You may be able to pull the seal and replace it without taking out the shaft. I put on a new gasket when I bolted the quill back onto the rear end case. I have never worked on a 4650, so yours may be different. The worst part for me was draining the oil and putting it back in (this was a fairly simple fix for me).

I replace them by just prying out the old seal and installing a new one while on the tractor. Drain the oil first though.

Thank you. Should have done it when i changed oil this spring if I knew it was that easy. It is a power shift. Sorry about the slow comeback to your questions. It's tied to the planter with a dozen hoses and wires now but as soon as planting season is over i can take it apart. Jim
