Hi all,

I am looking at a 1980 JD 2040 diesel...the seller claims everything is good, but a new seat and fuel shutoff cable will be needed.

Im new to the tractor buying scene (although was around them quite a bit growing up). Is there anything I need to be aware of for this particular model? I plan on using the tractor to pull small logs (land clearing), run a brush hog/finish mower, and eventually plow a small garden. Will a 2040 fit the bill?

It looks like I could purchase the tractor for around $4500...is this a reasonable price?

Thanksfor any and all input!

Check operation of hyd's after engine has reached operating temp.(190-200 degrees). It would be best if you acquired a coolant test kit to check PH of antifreeze. $4500 would be a decent price for a 2040 where I live.

I have the 1977 2040 that my dad bought new. It has 6000+ hours and has had very few repairs, rebuilt hyd pump due to seal leak, new clutch and rebuilt brake valve. The three cylinder engine is great on fuel. Mine is the old style while yours is the newer model often refered to as a tiger stripe because of the decal. The only feature you have that I do not like is a parking brake instead of a transmisson park. After years of running the older tractors I have a bad habit of forgetting to release the parking brake. I think you will like it and at that price I would buy it if it was near me. You can buy a new seat assembly aftermarket cheaper than the cushions from Deere. Tom

While I am like you in forgetting about the brake being set and ignoring the flashing light on the dash and can't here the beeper. LOL. I do much prefer the hand brake over the park gear. We have hills here and getting one stuck in park is not fun at all ! Just lucky the tractor I ran the most with that set up was also a TLB so you could relieve the pressure on the park with the loader or hoe and get it out of park.

Thanks for the info! Is this model heavy enough and have enough power to do everything I'm asking of it?

Also, any idea what the typical fuel consumption is?

Thanks!

Depends on which one it is.Some had open center hydraulics and a small hydraulic pump you can't get parts for.

I agree with Jim and others. The price sounds good. I've had my 1980 model for 5 years, and it's been very reliable. Mine has a 145 loader and loaded rears. It will lift the largest JD round bales with no problems. The hydraulics are well-designed.
