JD Front Weight...

Hi,

I have a JD front weight that looks like this:

I am looking for the bolts with the correct heads to mount more weights.
Can they be bought new, other than going through John Deere and paying to much?

Thanks,
Todd

Looks like they are more or less a 5/8" "carriage bolt", 2.75" long, #03H1857 at the DEERE dealer, for about $2.60 each.

I would recommend getting the Deere bolts. They are the correct hardness to take the weight and bouncing of that weight. I have seen soft bolts deform. Paul

In part pic ; item #8 , '03h 1858' ,5/8 x 3 1/2; round head, carriage style , probably grade 8 $3.16 at Deere ... special bolt hardware places should have also, maybe not a lot cheaper...

Typically, hardware stores carry a grade 2 carriage bolt. They're fine for the last two or three weights, but not good for the innermost weights if you're putting on a bunch of weights. Keep in mind that all the outer weights are held on by all the inner weights. The first two bolts hold EVERYTHING on. The carriage bolts from Deere are grade 5 and not really out of line for price. I've tried places like Fastenal, and they are actually more expensive than the Deere bolts. However, I do buy the Heavy Hex nuts by the box from Fastenal. the price difference isn't huge, but it is there. I currently have 8 on a double stack to counter a 4 bottom rollover plow on my 4430.

I am assuming you are referring to #8 in the diagram. The bolts fit in the groove and there is actually a special washer that will help them stay in place when you add another weight but aren't used much. The double stack setup helps protect front of tractor and also with main weight of around 150/200# you can add the 81# slab weights .I was told 7 was near the limit but have seen more.I have had some tractors with regular bolts and they can be hard to remove.I just called JD and parts guy thought the bolts were $4.67 a piece but he is usually about 50% right.I have many used ones if you want to contact by e-mail
