The simple, elusive answer

Trying to get the '49 B to start after replacing the flywheel, I could hardly get it to sputter. Ok, recheck the timing on the flywheel and the distributor. No go. Check the fuel, replace it with new fuel, after emptying and spilling, the 'old' fuel in the carb and the sediment bowl. No go. Check the spark at each plug. Reset the plug gaps and the point gap. No go. Run down the electrical system to ensure no severe voltage drop. No go. Check the air supply and cleaner - maybe a wasp or mouse nest? No go. Maybe if I set the plug gap to .035 instead of .030. No go. Look at old plugs, Hmmm - new plugs are a tad shorter than old plugs. Clean and gap old plugs. Yippee! Had to be the last thing I would have thought of - never heard of that happening. New plugs were purchased from John Deere dealer.
 
The Autolite 386 is a resistor plug where the D23 is not. If you have a magneto and it is not as strong as it needs to be the resistor plug will cause the symptoms you saw. Get a pair of 3116 (non-resistor) plugs and you should be good to go. If you had the gap set too wide on the 386 plugs that would compound your troubling symptoms. Mike
