Marvel Shelber TSX-952 on JD 219

If I had any hair, I'd be tearing it out.

Tricky question, and a long one, so read carefully.

Marvel Shelber TSX-952, w/anti-diesel solenoid on JD 219 in a 3300 combine.

On first startup this spring, it fired up OK but immediately started running rich and quit. Wouldn't restart. Thought it was a stuck float (I drain the carb over winter) but no. Pulled the carb, and disassembled, checked float and needle valve.. all OK, no sunk float, needle works OK, etc. At first I thought it was flooding over from the float bowl but it isn't in the way a stuck float would do it. It drools fuel from the throat of the carb, but it doesn't do it until and unless the engine is cranking. In other words, you can leave the ignition on, electric fuel pump operating, and no fuel leaks. The float bowl isn't flooding over. Soon as you start cranking the engine, it starts spilling fuel. It seems to be coming out the main nozzle (can't really see up the throat while cranking). The engine will not start and the fuel comes out worse when I pull the choke (of course).

Seemed like a good time to go thru the carb, so I got a full kit, including a new float. Thought I might see some problem (I was a car mechanic in the carb era, so I know downdraft carbs anyway). Didn't see any obvious problems inside. Carefully set the new float, and adjusted everything according to my manual and the kit instructions, reassembled the carb..... same thing.

Checked fuel pressure, and it's right on spec, 3 PSI. The needle and seat holds air, using my mouth. When I pull the carb, keeping the fuel in it, and pulling the top of the carb, the level of fuel seems to be about right.

As I said.. give me a Q-Jet, a Thermoquad, a Solex or an SU, I can deal. This carb is so bloody simple, I'm feeling like my status as master mechanic is swirling it the bowl. I can't believe I can't figure this out. Keep the shinola away, because I wonder if I could tell the difference ( : < ).

Any Ideas or can anyone refer me to someone who might be an ace on these carbs?

Many thanks!

We run 7 TSX --- MS carbs. [elec. solenoid shut off] on / 2- 2510's , 2520 , 2- 880 swathers, 2 combines.. And every one has had similar problems as yours ,I learned, first thing to check, elec. solenoid; I've thrown everyone out put in manual fuel adjust & shutoff , AT 23015 and solved a lot of troubles...

I bench tested the solenoid but I've had a nagging suspicion about it. Can you clue me in more on the part number you listed? Thanks!

AT23015 is available at Deere, but they've gotten very proud of them ; Used to be $35 now $104, I've been getting the generic ones, aftermarket, [ fit same, like the adjust handle on them better]... ASAP. parts has them for $22 ; this sight may have them also...

Ok, I was just up at the barn to look more closely at the solenoid. Forgive me that I am the kind of guy that wants to know why. It comes from working on customer cars, where you couldn't just throw parts at something until it was fixed.

Anyway, I pulled the solenoid and bench tested it. The pin retracts when 12V is applied. The adjustment screw changes the position of the pin as it should. What this looks like to me is simply a jet into which is fitted a electrically retracted pin that cuts off fuel to the main jet when the ignition is shut off, thus preventing running-on. I don't see how this device could cause the over-fueling I am getting? I could see it preventing the engine from starting by not allowing fuel to flow, but I am having the opposite problem.
