I have a Model 50 tractor and it has started to jump out of 3rd gear quite often. Any ideas or suggestions are appreciated thanks.

2 gears are worn, to my knowledge there it not a JD 50 still running today that does not JUMP out of 3rd, nature of the beast over this many years of hard work. It can be fixed with a little labor trans inspection and a shaft or a couple gears replaced, generally not worth it unless you do a lot of PLOWING with it.3rd gear was the PLOW GEAR. Hope this helps, they are a good tractor.

In the later 50's there is a internal lock that also is in the 520 & 530 tractors. This problem has existed since the late model B came out. If you look in the Service Letters It describes the problem and the fix. The parts book also shows all the parts to fix it.

reason they get that way is the tapped roller brg get worn and lets the bottom shaft down that wares the gear at an angle then they push out of gear
