1945 model A Transmission #554698

Help! My tractor was working in high range only. Now.....not working in high or low. Are there any service manuals devoted specifically to transmissions? How do I diagnose the problem or problems? Could the clutch adjustment have anything to do with my problem?

Ray,

Is your belt pulley turning when you engage the clutch? If so, it shouldn't be a clutch issue. You may have an issue where either your gear shift handle or override selector (hi/lo) has jumped out of the shifter and you are now in a neutral setting.

Look on page 76 of PC-675 (Model A parts manual - available for free download on jdparts.com). Item 19 is your override handle. Item 18, your override lever, is attached to the handle underneath the transmission cover. The handle should be positioned in the cup of Item 13 on page 78, which is the "shifter" that slides the gears on the shaft to select your range.

Also look at the gear shift lever, item 11 on page 76. It needs to be in the proper cups of the shifters as well. If the shifters have been slid off to the side by having the handle come out of the "cups" of the shifters, you would have pushed a gear too far and it may not be making contact with any other of the gears now.

Derik, Thanks for your reply. Pulley turns when the clutch is engaged. I did have the transmission top cover off to shim up play in the H/L shift lever. However, I am 99% sure on reinstallation that both gear shift lever and H/L lever are in the proper position. Maybe next weekend I can check it further. Ray
