john deere 40 wiring problem

I got to work on the burnt wiring and the red wire going from the amp meter to the starter
was burn up and the wire on the middle terminal and the terminal on the regulator was burn
also what could have caused this

that wire from the middle terminal also goes to the amp meter is there a way to test that meter to see if it is bad Thanks
 
There is a second way to approach your problem. Make or buy a new wiring harness. Before you 'Turn the Switch', check all the components (there aren't many) for faults - loose fitting, poor ground, de-magnetized etc. HTH
 
Use a test light to check for power flow through the ammeter.

Turn the ignition switch ON.

Test for power flow to the "<big>[b:654c4848f0]+[/b:654c4848f0]</big>" stud.

Then test for power flow to the "<big>[b:654c4848f0]-[/b:654c4848f0]</big>" stud.

If the test light shines on both sides of the ammeter, then the ammeter is good.
 
There's 60 years of rot in that wiring. Use the diagram and build yourself a new harness or buy one. Be a lot safer that way.
