720 crankshaft endplay

Howdy,

I'm having an issue with my 720's endplay and the clutch. I had the flywheel off (taper lock) and installed a new flywheel sleeve. I talked to Allen Machine works (the flywheel is an allen) and sent my old sleeve to him and after looking at it he sent me a new one. I installed everything according to the instructions, getting the flywheel good and tight. I test ran the tractor this morning and my flywheel is now rubbing the side of the crankcase and when I take the tractor down a grade the tractor essentially coasts down to the bottom and then the clutch picks up again moving the tractor ahead without me touching anything. I figure I have done something stupid and could use some input from guys with more brains than me. I sure do appreciate your thoughts. God bless.

With all the problems you had with the flywheel coming loose, the thrust washers are probably broke/gone, or worn. I just put 2 new ones in my diesel 70 on Wednesday night. JD has them available for about $38 each. Once the flywheel is loose the thrusts can easily come out of place. Mine were just severely worn and one tab was broke. You will need shims to shim up the thrust washer cover and a dial indicator to check it. Spec is .005" to .010". It took me about .040" in shims to get my endplay set. You should replace the oil seal in the slinger while its apart too. A manual will tell you how to properly check your endplay. You have to push everything together so the crank gear, slinger and metal thrust plate are sandwiched tight to the crank gear before checking end play.
