4020 ps linkage

I need some wisdom from those who have been there done that. My park linkage is sticking and not popping out when I go into 1st or rv. Is it just need to be lubed more often(lube kinda helps) or is the spring getting weak or is there some dirt some place I need to clean? Thanks for teaching us younger ones! :)

It is possible the spring could be broken. More than likely though, the park cable is full of rust or crud and needs replaced.

Ditto on rusty cable. I try soaking cable in oil as they're expensive. Also check spring(parts key 29) for weakness if in correct serial number range

The spring pulls it into park but coming out is manual from Key #23 and #26 . I just weld it to where it just clears when key #23 moves back and forth . Good time to replace bushings etc. while its disassembled . Sometimes the cable can be saved if you take it off and soak it in the wash tank, but you will ultimately have to replace it .

Thanks for the correction as I was going of my memory. It's been since the early 80's since I've seen that mechanism.

If it's also hard to get into park then it's probably the cable.
If not, check into what don said.
Remove the cowling so you can see what's happening.
