Steering problem

Deere 4430 turns really sharp to the right but when I
turn left it does not turn as sharp as the other side
due to the pitman arm contacting the axle. If I rotate
the pitman arm one tooth on gear box shaft flip flops
the problem.

Assuming you get the spindle put back to the timing mark where it should be, the only other thing I can think of is that you may have one tie rod longer than the other. This would explain a lot. A quick measure of the two should tell you this. What I do is center the arm under the tractor (regardless of how the wheels look temporarily) and go from there, adjusting each tie rod so they are identical in length and that your wheels have the correct toe in.

Thank you for the response. We have had this
problem since purchase 5 years ago. It's getting
annoying. I assume the pitman arm is aligned. I did
see a mark on the shaft but not the pitman arm.
Measured the tie rods and Both are the same. The
one thing that puzzles me is that when turning to
the left the pitman arm will contact the axle beam.
When turning to the right the pitman arm does not
even come close to the axle beam. This led me to
believe the pitman are was out of alignment with the
shaft but with no alignment mark on the pitman arm
I'm unsure if this is the case. I'm stumped. I will ad
that this unit does have front wheel assist.

If that's an early 4430 the steering motor has 2 pistons, one front and one to the rear of the steering shaft . Sounds like you are only lining up one of them .

Thanks for the replies. Apparently someone has had the gear box apart before. The shaft in the steering gear box was not re installed in the same position and was of a tooth. Problem solved a new seal was needed anyway all fixed thanks.
