Brakes setting on JD 1020

I have a 1967 John Deere 1020 that I just purchased. I have a problem in that the brakes are good, but when I drive a few hundred yards, the brake pressure builds internally somehow without pressing the brake pedals and eventually the motor cannot pull the tractor against the brake pressure. If I shut it down for 10-15 minutes the pressure bleeds off and I can go another few hundred yards. I have had the brake master unit completely rebuilt, fluid replaced and the JD dealer even worked on it to adjust it but he couldn't fix it. Any ideas?

I don't remember a problem of the brakes locking on a 1020. Try loosening both bleeders on the top of rear axle housings then drive tractor and report the outcome.

Thank you Tx Jim for the suggestion. I took a piece of clear plastic tubing and a 3/8 wrench and went out for a drive. When my brakes locked up I put the tubing over the brake bleed and opened it. The pressure pushed fluid only about 4-5 inches up into the tube but it released the brake. Then I drove some more and it seemed that the brakes locked up less and less as I drove and went through several more cycles of releasing the pressure using the bleed valve. Instead of locking up every 100 yards I could drive a quarter mile and it hardly started to bind. The right brake seems to be completely free. I will try it again tomorrow and let you know.

Make certain neither brake is dragging at all. Otherwise your tractor will be reduced to scrap price when the brakes wear out and rub metal on metal which fills the hydraulic system with filings.
