2955 hydro filter question

So have a random question about the hydraulic filter on my 2955. I’ve had this tractor for years and changed the filter easily 4-5 times. After looking at the parts diagram, I just recently noticed that I am missing the retainer (part #4 in the pic) and spring (part #7). I have always just set the filter inside the filter cover and tightened the bolt into place, didn’t even occur to me I was missing any parts.

I haven’t noticed any issues with this in the 2000+ hours I’ve run the tractor, but is the filter not going to fit into place or work properly without that retainer? Should I get the right parts and make sure it’s in correctly, or am I just worrying too much? I don’t want to cause other issues down the road by not having a simple filter in place right. Thanks.

Your oil has been bypassing your filter for as
long as that disk has been missing.

Yes I have seen this several times, the spacer/washer gets thrown away with a filter un-noticed some where along the way, I have seen them "spin" and let the rubber flange/seal on the end of the filter come loose and end up plugging some thing up along the way to the front pump,, on 2950's and the like it ends up in the cavity behind the brake valve..This is something that should be kept in mind when you change a filter,, the snap ring (#3)fails is what starts it all...

That's what I was afraid of. When I changed filters I noticed one of the end seals was missing. Thats what made me do a little digging. Can the brake valve cavity you mention be accessed easily or only if the tractor is torn down? If all the oil has been bypassing the filter I hope im not in for hidden issues down the road if anything has gotten past it that shouldn't have....

I think brake valve cavity Tim referred to can only be accessed by disassembly of trans or looking down through trans shafts/gears. I think removing brake valve all one can see is the hole where hyd oil is supplied to valve but It's been a long time since I've seen this area.

No you can get access through the back of the brake valve mounting point, I have had pieces of the filter seal washer plug the hole where trans oil is sent on to the front pump..

Should I try to take a look and see if anything is in there? Or just wait to see if anything ever becomes plugged. I have had the tractor 8 years and knock on wood no issues from any of this yet...

If the filter hasn't been doing it's job correctly, would it be wise to change out all the hydraulic oil? I've never done a complete change before, only new filters.

Wait till it acts up,, the possibility was there for that to happen,, but it doesn't mean that it did...I have seen it 3 times in this model...but unfortunately I work on "Dozens" of them...

Thanks for the help. Hopefully nothing ever comes of it. I just like to keep everything in good order and well maintained, I feel like its a lot easier to do that than to try to figure out and fix problems on the other end!

Ooh yes you need to pay attention to details that's for sure, and some times the most common chore like changing an oil filter can lead to an issue latter. Every one should make sure this don't happen on their units, even on 4010's on up, and of course when changing the engine oil filter you need to make sure the old filter o-ring don't stay stuck to the engine un-noticed,,this can cause a catastrophe to happen too... on big and small tractors and cars and trucks...
