720 diesel on thin ice right now

Howdy folks,

I've got a 720 that is giving me fits right now. Any time I drive down a grade it starts rolling just as fast as it can until it reaches the bottom, at which time the clutch grabs again and it continues on in the gear it was in at the top of the hill (with no interference from me). I gathered that the problem was too much endplay in the crankshaft. I first noticed this problem when the nut on the flywheel nearly rubbed a hole in the flywheel cover while the tractor was sitting in the yard running. After that I learned about the freewheeling down hills problem. So, I have since had the flywheel off (Allen Machine Works taper lock flywheel) and reset the endplay. This last time I did all I could to keep the crank in correct position while adjusting the collar to between .005 and .o10 of endplay and tightened the flywheel by tapping it once, tighten, tap, tighten, etc. The last several cranks on the nut were done with a four foot pipe wrench and a six foot long piece of galvanized pipe. It was all I could do to finish up. So, tonight I start it up and back it out of the shop so it can run a bit and warm up the oil for it's servicing. The tractor sounded better than it had for a while (more normal) and the clutch was very responsive as I backed it out. I was excited. However, after it had sat running for about 10 minutes I heard a scraping noise start up around the flywheel cover and it got worse. I knew in the back of my mind what had happened. I decided to test it and drove it up a small grade by the shop and pointed it downhill in 2nd gear. It buzzed right down the hill as fast as it could, reached the bottom and the clutch kicked back in again in 2nd gear. By the time I got it into the shop (a minute or two) the flywheel cover was smoking from friction. I can only assume that the flywheel and collar have backed off the crank again and my endplay is waaaaay too much like before. After all I've done what can I do to resolve this? Do I just need to buy a new collar and nut? Could they be the problem? Do I need a 10 foot section of pipe to get enough torque? I'm getting a little desperate at this point. If no body knows the answer to any of these questions, could you tell me how many sticks of dynamite it takes to finish the old girl off? Thanks in advance. God bless.

Is endplay set by the position of the flywheel on yours or with shims behind the slinger cover? On mine I had the same problem when after pounding the taper lock on, the collar would move on the crank. I removed the flywheel, set endplay with a spacer as per the manual, then put the collar back on. I then drilled and tapped the end of the crank and put a bolt and washers on there to keep the collar from walking off the crank while pounding the flywheel on. Worked for me.
