5203 brakes

5203 LH brake dragging, pulled axle hsg off and removed piston. With the 3 return pins removed and o-rings, piston moves freely in axle hsg. SOOOO should I replace return pins and O-rings and reassemble? Is there a setting for return pins on reassembly? Just looking, roll pin /return pins lock in axle hsg and their springs pull piston back? Me & "Old Crow" are anxiously awaiting for input. Thanks, john

I've seen this subject discussed several times on another tractor site but have not read any results from other people removing springs even though spring removal was discussed & IIRC carried out. JD utility tractors had similar brakes with a similar brake valve from the 20 -50 series with "no pull off springs". My only guess to why the springs were added is minisculey decrease the amount of fuel used per hp hr to meet EPA REGULATIONS.

I too have seen this problem discussed many times. I came close to tearing one down some time back for this very problem, but the owners opted to trade off the tractor instead. I'm still somewhat confused as to what actually causes the drag. Over the years I've been through similar problems on many make/model tractors and for the most part when opened up the reasons were usually self evident. In this case I don't think I've ever seen the problem/solution fully defined. I don't see how springs pushing the piston away from the disc causes a drag? Could it be that differences in the strength of the springs can actually put the piston in a bind cocking it slightly sideways in the bore? Thus leaving the springs out entirely eliminates the binding but still leaves the piston in minimal contact with the disc? This slight contact still creates some drag but not enough to notice during tractor operation? Just wondering here

My guess is one of the return pins worked out a bit causing a bind? Should have measured piston height before "ripping apart". Interesting thought on eliminating pins except for residual press in brake line? Received email ser bulletin this am, Deere suggests just reassembly and adjusting piston/ret pins per tech manual. Thanks for reply's, john

The brake retractors are to be screwed into the brake plate and the brake plate installed on the tractor. The retractors need to be pressed in to the bores until the bottom out - the operation is to retract the brake plate a set distance so that the brakes don't drag, but as the brakes wear, the retractors slowly work they way out of the bores to maintain the distance. I know there has been failures documented on DTAC cases from Deere - retractors were changed and everything was good again.
