G Differential Removal

I am removing the differential in my 1950 GW but it looks like the axle housing needs to be split off the transmission case in order to get the necessary clearance to extract the diff. Is there a trick here in removing it without splitting off the axle housing?
 
It won't come straight out as it sits in there, you have to do some twisting around with it. Most times you end up with at least 3 fingers with black nails.
 
I've always had the axle housing off when I took one out. Get it turned just right and it will almost fall out. Tougher getting it back in till you hit that sweet spot or angle.
