4320 Loose Shifter

The shifter on my 4320 is getting loose, (syncro trans) I haven't looked into it yet, what is the likely issue in there?

Wear is usually the biggest issue. Bushings in the drums, thrust washers, the interlock latch can get worn. I usually weld up the sides of the shift lever so it is snug in the drum slots. The other wear area is the arms and bottom of the rods on the transmission.

There could be a whole host of things that can wear and start contributing a "loose shifter". For starters, the gearshift lever itself can get horizontal grooves cut into it, which lets it travel further than it should. Second, the shifter drums themselves can wear in the spots where the lever contacts. The bushings #9 in the gearshift pivot can wear and also the roll-pin #12. The plastic thrust washers #8 can wear down and cause lateral slop on the main shaft. The pins #19 and even the pin holes in the yokes #20 can wear. Sometimes the looseness is not limted to the dash. The shifting rods where they attach the shifting arms on the side of the trans are also notorious for wear that causes sloppiness that 'seems' like it's in the shifter. So it is important to try to pinpoint exactly what is causing your looseness.
