JD50. Rebuild

I may be asking a tuff question here, but here goes. I was brought a 50 a while back that was partly tore apart. They had gotten to the stage of
removing the crank and didn't know how. It had been sitting a while, was dirty and some rust had set in. So I had the crank ground, sleeves put
in the cylinders, head redone, radiator out to be fixed, since every thing was apart I started cleaning up things so when I reassembled it would be
painted and nice like it should be. Rebuilt the generator, rebuilt the fan shaft assembly, rebuilt the governor (rust had attacked it), rebuilt the carb
and distributor, cleaned up all the small parts and painted as I went along. Cleaned up the hydraulic pump after disassembling it and replacing
seals, relined the brakes, redid the wiring and gauges, and lights. So after overhauling and reassembling, I got it running and it runs good. The
paint can be put on by someone who knows paint better than I do, so I stopped there. Now my question is, what can a guy charge for what I
have all done? I know there are a 1000 answers, but what could be a reasonable price? I have the price of the parts, but I'm wondering about
the hours for the labor to do all this. We all know there are many hours spent that we can hardly charge for, but that is not really fair either, since
time is invested doing what you have to do.... Thanks for any estimates here. I just want to be fair in charging the guy.

Guess it depends on whether you want the "legal" answer or the "moral" answer. The legal answer is easy , unless you are a liscensed repair facility and had a written estimate/contract made up and signed as per state law, you can't charge him anything. Since I believe you are really after the "moral" answer here, it is still dependent on a lot of unstated information. Basically , what were the verbal conditions under which you ended up with this project? There can be no valid answer to your question without this info. Or should I say , there are 100 answers to your question without this info.

It sounds like you did this work for someone else. The time to of talked about price was BEFORE all the work was done !
I used to get a lot of projects like that and I could not in good conscious bill for all my time. That's why I'm poor ! The regular businesses that are making money have no problem with marking up every single part and charging for every hour of time and most are all 2 weeks booked up all year long. Go figure ?
At this stage sit down with them and show them all the time spent on it and see if you can come to an agreement. If not then you now own a model 50 with more money in it than it's worth ! Join the club. I May of been one of it's founding members ! LOL.

Seems you are a good repairman but definitely no businessman. The only way to salvage a friend at this point is ask him what he's willing to pay. In Kentucky the old statement people made was "what do I owe you" which translates into "you think I'm going to pay". If he pay's you something the feelings will be hurt on your end and just suck it up for not negotiating the price on the front side. He may think he did you a favor to get all that good tractor restoration experience and you owe him.
