2640 Dash Light

I just bought a 1978 2640 that came with the owner's manual and a shop manual. On the right side of the dash above the throttle lever is a nickel sized red light. It comes on when I start the tractor and then goes out as the engine gets to speed. I checked both the manuals I have and neither shows the light as part of the instrument panel.

My question is, is the light for the alternator or is it an oil pressure light?

Parts book should show that somewhere? http://jdpc.deere.com/jdpc/servlet/com.deere.u90490.partscatalog.view.servlets.HomePageServlet_Alt Main wiring harness is one spot to start.
An early or late 2640? During mid production manufacturing was moved to Mannheim.
Measuring system electrical voltage at various rpms and with the head lights on will indicate possible problems.
The alternator pulley, fan pulley and fan belts are often worn. Over tightening enough to prevent slippage on worn pulleys will ruin the alternator and water pump bearings.
A real mechanical oil pressure gauge would verify oil pressure? Is there lightweight winter oil in the crankcase that has been diluted even thinner by hard winter starting?

I'm sorry to correct you but 2640's were never built in Mannheim only built in Dubuque,Ia. 1coxwk's 1978 2640 would be classified as an early model
