M John Deere governor

Anyone know how to adjust the linkages on the carb, and the governor on an M? I have a surge, where the engine idles down then speeds up a bit before slowing back down, does this cycle constantly. I think it has to be an adjustment issue. I've done about all tuning with no improvement at all. Starts great, runs fairly good with a little pop back in the exhaust but surges all the time except full throttle. Thanks for all the help you guys have offered on this tractor, it has been a big help.

I think you have a dirty passage in the carb or you need to open the load screw up some. Check fuel supply to the carb.

Carb rod is set 1 & 1/2 to 2 rounds short. Governor rod is set 1 & 1/2 to 2 rounds long. Do make sure the cotter pin isn't hanging on anything.

Lets try.

Well I'm scratching my head now. I have rebuilt the carb, set the points, new plugs, installed an ignition switch, re-wired the alternator to be correct. And set the timing with a light. It still has that annoying surge, will not idle down smooth. Still popping back in the exhaust and will puff some out of the carb. air inlet when it pops back. Any suggestions? Thanks

It sure sounds like you have a fuel flow problem. Take the drain out of the bottom of the carb. You should have a pencil sized flow for more that 30 seconds (actually for longer ). If not, you have a plugged filter or fuel control valve. Did you check the screen attached to the fuel inlet elbow on the carb? These are frequently missed. DO NOT try to separate the screen from the elbow, but clean it with compressed air and brake cleaner.

I've done all I know to do. Pulled the carb back off & soaked in parts cleaner for 3 days, blew out & cleaned inlet filter, cleaned tank and installed new bowl and filter. Still doing the same thing. Any more suggestions?

Not cleaned an M carb before but I've got the same issue on my 60. set distributor, points, new plugs, good copper wires, set governor linkage and still has the hunting issue. Dad cleaned the carb but my guess is there is still a bug in there. I asked if he took the plugs out and he didn't. I cleaned a DLTX 10 carb for my son's B and it is impossible to get the idle passages clean witout removing the plugs, it's not old gas but rust build up that gets them. My guess is we both have the same problem and something is in the idle passages. Mine pulls fine and runs smooth under a load but just want idle right. I've got to use it like it is for now but plan on pulling the carb and taking all the solid plugs out for a thorough cleaning just as soon as I can.

Does it smooth out and pull fine under a load?
