pulling a packer behind a drill

Hey all,

Bought a Taylor Way 12' packer to pull behind my B246C drill. I built a nice little hitch outta scrap metal to pull it off the back step, but the hitch weight on the packer is MUCH too much. I was thinking of mounting a bogey wheel on the packer. I have a caster wheel off an FM cultivator. I was thinking of mounting a piece of square tube vertically on the tongue about at the jack, then mounting a square tube to that horizontally to mount the bogey wheel. Any input?

I built a 13 foot rubber tire packer to go behind my 8300 drill....Hitch on the drill is similar to yours, but I ran steel up to the main hitch to put the pull on the hitch. Regarding tongue weight, is there a way to add support above the drill hitch?

Consider a gooseneck going over the top of the drill.
Shorten the tongue so the packer trails closer
to the drill.
Add a hitch about 18" tall a foot or so behind the
drill hitch.

I think forget about the wheel, but consider making your hitch stronger. We did that a long time ago on an 8300 drill... we replaced the wood boards with 3 inch channel iron. If you are on any hills, you'll
be glad you heavied up the hitch.

Why not make a two wheel dolly to go between the drill and the packer? Would take all the tongue weight. Granted, no fun backing up. I"d still stiffen up the hitch on the drill. Another option is a fixed dolly behind the drill, but with crazy wheels...could back up that way.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I just pulled the packer separate for now.

I thought of the bogey wheels behind the drill, but figured one on the hitch of the packer would do the same thing. The packer is so heavy that it causes negative tongue weight on the drill. I could push the tongue down by hand, so it must be less than 200 pounds.

I am gonna take the short piece of angle iron off and mount one the full width of the drill.

The gooseneck idea is probably the best, but too involved to be able to do it in time to get my oats in.
