Factory cast iron repairs

I got a 48A that I have wire wheeled the whole tractor to get ready to paint. I have found 3 spots on it that looks like they had a defect in the casting and repairs have been made .It looks like it was done at the factory. There a spot on the rear end housing and one under the inspection cover and there silver like a stainless color and there sanded smooth. I just wonder if the castings didn't come out like the wanted and they made repairs at the factory to get them out the door.

That could be high (55% or 99%) nickle welding rod. It is used to weld cast iron and really flows and welds very nicely. I have used it to repair drill holes in a drill press table. Works great, but costly, $2 or $3 per 1/8" rod.

I have seen some of the same and thought it was a factory repair too as they looked so good.

We use to machine a lot of casting and most of them had sand holes it them. They would weld them and machine over them just for looks. If they were real bad they junked the casting

I used to visit Monarch machine tools. They made an expensive machine tools and as I remember, they had employees that made their living filling the imperfections in their casting before painting.

A guy I worked with dipped his dismantled chinese vise in the carb tank to repaint it. They used Bondo to fill the many voids at the factory. It went into the scrap barrel.

The year the Two-Cylinder Expo was held at Moline, IL, several of us were looking at a tractor with a rough casting. A man came along and said he had worked at the John Deere Foundry many years before, and used some kind of grey material to repair rough places on castings to make them look better. He said he did not know what it was, but it was easy to apply. I wish I had asked him more about it.
