There's a John Deere 3010 for sale on Craigslist. The ad says the 3010 was updated to a 3020 by John Deere.Just curious what is involved to make a 3010 a 3020.I"m thinking engine upgrade?Thank's Paul

Yes, it has a 3020 liner kit in it,, I am not sure that you can even find a 3010 liner kit anymore,, unfortunately it will still have the troublesome 3010 PTO set up and that can not be changed over to 3020 style...unless it's a low price I would look past it...it's a $3500 tractor

We bought a new one (3010 tricycle diesel) along with a 122 picker in 1963; it was a great machine...........52 years ago. Used it for 5 years with no trouble and then swapped it and the picker in on a 699.

That's in line with what they go for around here tires and looks add or take away,, they are a good back up hay tractor and odds and ends use....

They are a good back up hay tractor as Tim S says---for those of us not able to have such luxuries as a good back-up hay tractor, the one I have (diesel tricycle) is a good primary hay tractor in my small operation- runs the haybine, rakes, and is great ferrying the thrower wagons around with the narrow front. Use it with a nice heavy blade that cleans the barn and scrapes the lane. Also runs the manure spreader and the grain drill/seeder.
Is pretty dependable and mostly easy to work on. Has aged better than most 52 year-olds I know……

Then it seems odd that JD realized how bad of a problem the bolts were and switched to the snap ring in only three years on the 3020/4020.

Yes, I'm sure they did, but back then they worked hard to make a dependable unit, now they strive to make them an electronic nite mare

I can"t believe Carpenters Equip. would sell it that cheap , That 3010 is well equipped , full 3pt.; full set front weights ; dual hyd. ; factory wide front ; very good tires... & converted to 12 volt...

Ha-Ha! No comment.

Only thing we used the PTO on our 4010 for was to run the #30 combine over 30-40 acres of oats every summer. Dad had Grade 8 bolts, lock washers AND Blue Lock-tite on the four bolts holding the stub shaft on. They got checked for tightness every load of oats. And this was on a tractor only 5-6 years old!

3020/4020's were a big improvement over 3010/4010's. All the dealers around home ordered them with diff locks. Really helped when plowing in difficult conditions.
