JD 2240 control shaft seals leaking

Hi Guys,
My early model 2240 has leaking load shaft seals and I am wondering if there is a better way to replace them than what my manual would have me believe. I have read some posts that make it sound pretty easy but when I look at the manual it has me remove the left final drive along with the rockshaft cover. Is there another way? The seals are installed from the inside correct? Any clarification is appreciated.

R&R of load control seals can be accomplished ""without removing"" final drive & rockshaft housing.

Drain trans oil,put L/D control under seat in "D",remove draft arms, tap shaft out of trans case, check bushings for excessive wear,R&R seals, reinstall shaft & 3pt draft arms shimming excess side to side motion out of shaft. While oil is drained would be a good time to check cleanliness of sump screen(parts key 15)

Thank you for the help Jim. The seals were actually quite easy to replace compared with what was shown in the manual!
