old ,new question. need help with hyd fluid in dubuque jdeer

putting seals in hyd pumps (mi & 40s). ready to put fluid in, but researching some, there seems to be 5 or 6 right kinds and wts(opinions) of fluid. if motor oil is used 10, 20, or 30wt, then question of detergent or non detergent. is there any consensus on oil wt.

Of course there isn't! lol

60 years ago when they were brand new Deere thought 10wt was the way to go. IF you are rebuilding the entire system from front to back I would tell you that's still valid.(Hyguard would be even better) You aren't and it isn't. Leakage is the issue. 20wt or 30wt is thicker and leaks less inside and out. That's what I use and why I use it. You can use whatever wt you want and it will work (if the piston seal isn't too bad) just be aware or the consequences.

As my old friend John T would say - "clear as mud now?" lol

The Operator's Manual suggests 10W oil for the M Series and 40 Series tractors.

Suggest using non-detergent oil.

We use 10W oil in our M, three MTs, and both 40s.

Hope this helps.

thanks for all the replies & opinions. no disrespect to anyone, but there doesn't seem to be one right oil. (clear as mud right) think I will go with about the middle ---20 wt. again thanks!

I would use the same oil that I used in the engine , this would allow you to
keep 1 oil on hand for this tractor. My nickel.

There is a good reason to use motor oil in the hydraulic system of the Dubuque tractors. If the hydraulic pump seal leaks then the hydraulic oil leaks into the engine crankcase. That being said. you should use NON detergent oil in the hydraulic system and detergent oil in the engine. You probably have been using regular (detergent) oil in the engine anyway so the old wives' tale about washing all the junk loose doesn't apply. You should use NON detergent oil in the hydraulic system because detergent oil can and will mix with moisture and foam which will cause the pump to cavitate and may push oil out the breather. If you don't want to use non detergent motor oil, then a non foaming hydraulic fluid should be your choice. The moisture in the hydraulic system comes from the air that the system breathes in when using the three point. As the three point is moved up and down some air is drawn in and pushed out.

Like James said I go with the owners manual and put in 20wt for summer and typically put in 10 wt for winter. Last winter here in MA wasn't that bad so the 20 wt stayed in. This winter however was so cold I changed over to 10 wt mid January when the cold set in. I plow with my MT so the 10 wt helps things warm up faster and move easier when cold.
