John Deere M help needed

Just bought a 1950 model John Deere M. The big hub caps on the front are missing, is that all that protects the bearings or should there be a smaller dust cap?
Another thing is that someone put an alternator on the tractor and it's not a 1 wire, uses the built in regulator. the only way to shut the tractor off is to lower the throttle all the way til the engine stops. then I have to take off a battery cable since there is not a switch. What's the best way to fix this? I'm thinking maybe buy a new switch for the dash and follow the wiring diagram to re-wire the whole tractor but dont know how to work in this alternator. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

On the cast wheels the big cast hubcap is all there is. You do need a switch. Doesn't need to be for an M since there is no longer a cut out. A 40 / 420 or pert near anything else will work fine. Depends on whether you want lights or not. Wiring isn't a problem. E-mail is open.

Take a look at the diagram below.

If your 50M has cast iron wheels, then there is no smaller dust cap.

One of the first improvements made to our Dubuque tractors was to re-wire the tractor.

Our M and all three MTs have a generator, but both or our 40s have alternators.

This method/way displayed below will work for your Model M.

This is one method/way to use/install an "exciter switch" for the alternator.

Take a look at the photo below that displays the wiring connections for the ignition switch, ammeter, and push button exciter switch.

Sorry about that; clicked the wrong button.

Another look at the panel wiring.

Take a look at the photo below of the wire from the ammeter to the starter switch.

Take a look at the photo below of the wiring for the alternator and resister.

The exciter switch on this tractor is a push button toggle switch.

An exciter switch could possibly be installed above the ignition switch on the Model M.

Hope this helps.

often during an alternator conversion, a diode is used to prevent the back-feed keeping the ignition alive. see, for example, http://www.yesterdaystractors.com/cgi-bin/viewit.cgi?bd=farmall&th=789026
