Ad says it is the first one made ? Didn't these start serial numbers at 60000 so that would make 60001 the second one would it not ??

I stand to be corrected here but I thought the 40 etc SN's all ran together with the designation (S, U etc) stamped on the end. I can't see the first 40 tractor being a V designation.

Reviewed the JOHN DEERE TRACTOR DATA BOOK and it states: "[i:654c4848f0]Serial number 60001 was the first Model 40V, built October 29, 1954[/i:654c4848f0]"

Hope this helps.

All variation model 40 tractors (T,H,V,C,W,U,S) started with s/n 60001 and progressed consecutively as they were produced. There were 7 different 60001 40's built, each being the first of it's type. It is possible to have 7 model 40's with the same S/N. All but the T had the type variation stamped after the model 40 on the tag. The T's only had 40 then the S/N. The 40's were the only model JD serialized this way.

Thanks Guys.

Now I wonder why I had the idea that number 1 was sometimes actually number 2 ???

Was there some other series that counted differently ???

Read the photo ad a couple of times and may have figured it out.

Part of the ad stated:

"[i:654c4848f0]Second lowest number produced of the 40 series tractor with 329 produced.[/i:654c4848f0]"

Not a licensed member or deputy of the correct vocabulary police, but probably would have used/substituted the word "[b:654c4848f0]fewest[/b:654c4848f0]" for the word "[b:654c4848f0]lowest[/b:654c4848f0]" as follows:

"[i:654c4848f0]Second [b:654c4848f0]fewest[/b:654c4848f0] number produced of the 40 series tractor with 329 produced.[/i:654c4848f0]"

Hope this helps.
