4020 clutch adjustment

Can clutch fingers be adjusted in the tractor and meet spec or do I need to split the tractor to adjust?

Each group of 3 clutch fingers and 3 PTO clutch fingers needs to be adjusted to the specified "height" EXACTLY evenly so they contact the TO bearing at the same time, or things aren't gonna work very well!

If I may ask, WHY do you think the fingers need to be adjusted at this point?

Long story short: New to me 4020 from dealer, previouse owner had installed new clutch, dealers tech thought clutch pedal at front of slot was "no clutch" and needed adjustment, so adjusted fingers out and set clutch at back of slot. Now have new clutch with no adjustment in clutch pedal and need to reset clutch fingers back to proper setting. Correct method is to split tractor, set clutch, and reassemble tractor.

I pulled lower cover off clutch housing and have verified that clutch is either new or refurb; everything is clean, new fingers, bolts, pins, throwout bearing, and clutch pad (appears to be new). I talked with mechanic that installed clutch and he machined flywheel, installed rear main seal and tranmission seals, etc. Complete repair as I would expect.

FYI tractor was advertised as recent clutch and I expected proper clutch adjustment. Currently working with dealer over how clutch will get back to proper adjustment. Expecting that dealer will not want to split to readjust clutch, since they already agjusted and indicated that the tractor was not split for initial readjustment.

It would have been good if the "mechanic" that monkeyed with the screws had recorded the number of turns or "flats" he had moved them, then you could put them right back where they were.

One would HOPE he at least did it evenly... you could try backing them out, say three turns each, and give it a try.

If they are even to start with, that should help. You can then go more or less, if needed.

On the other hand, if they are not even, the clutch will be funky, and the uneven fingers will flop the TO bearing around causing noise and wear.

The traction clutch fingers can be adjusted fairly accurately by loosening them past where you want them, then setting the TO bearing where you want them set and using a feeler gauge between the bearing and fingers. You are setting the fingers to the same height whether it is spec height or off a little. The TO bearing will take the place of the adjusting gauge as a reference point. The PTO fingers are a different story due to the procedure for setting them. Maybe you get lucky and they didn't mess with the PTO.

I talked with the service manager and he told me back was full clutch. I told him to think about the geometry and check the tech manual and here and he would learn that all the way forward is full.
My understanding is the finger height is critiical to prevent rivet contact with the flywheel when the clutch is shot. He recommended backing the nuts off and using feeler gauges to get the fingers even. He thinks it might take a couple hours. Flat rate on clutch disk r&r is 3.5 hrs. My thought are it should get fixed right by splitting the tractor. Less chance of future issues and it appears it was correct before adjustment since it here is paint on the bolts from clutch manufacturer.
