john deere a brakes

I have 2 John Deere A's, 1 styled, 1 unstyled and when driving it makes a growling sound until you push on the brake pedal just a little then it goes away when you let off it may come back in a minute or two, any idea what I should look for

I have the assembly apart on the styled A the only two things I can see are the brake drum rivets are a little loose and the brake drum is
glazed. the pedal moves freely and the brake shoes also seem to move freely

Hi,
I have a model 60 that did the very same thing... I sanded the lining & it helped it for
about 1/2 a MILE of driving & noise returned.. I then turned the brake drum ( machined) in a brake
lathe.. That too worked for about 2 or 3 miles of driving time & the noise returned.. I then
took the rh shoes & lining & placed them on the lh brake. This worked great for about 2 months
& the rh brake noise returned.. I had another complete brake less the shoes. I could not see
anything wrong with the brake asy. But I install the other assmeble & it didnt' help. Made the
noise immeadiatly. I then cleaned the shoes in paint thinner, let them lay out in the sun to dry..
Reinstalled the shoes & the noise came back. In the mean time I ordered new lining, after the
noise returned after the 10th time I relined the brakes. Lines that 2/32 lining above the rivots.
This was about 1.5 years ago & the brake have been quiet since. I really think the lining at
some point in time got oil soaked or something. Someone Might add a fix, I thought I tried
about everything??

Had the same problem with the left brake on one of our Model 70s.

Removed the brake drum and replaced all the rivets.

No more noise.

Hope this helps.

I had a similar problem after replacing the brakes on my "B" and it turned out I had too much play in one of the brake pads. As soon as I adjusted the brakes a little tighter the growling went away. If you think about it when you push on the pedal slightly it is the same as tightening the brakes. Good luck!
