we have a 2940 last week steering wheel felt like it was locking up. So we pulled the sttering motor off of it is a char-lynn motor . We took it apart and we could find nothing wrong with it sowee clean all of it up very good and put it back to geather. We put it back on tractor and now when you startmotor it is fine till you touch the steering whell then it starts jerking so hard ou can hold the wheel and it also turns wrong way some of the time any help PLEASE ? can I tbe fix or do I need to look for a motor?

It's not a MOTOR, it's a VALVE, and common sense should have dictated you shouldn't have torn into it without a shop manual, and some troubleshooting ahead of time.

I don't know exactly what's wrong exactly what you have done, but there's some assembly procedures to follow to time the gerotor and deal with some flat springs/torque springs.

GOOD for you for having the manual at hand!

It is a self-contained unit in that the issues you are having seem likely due to an issue with the valve, rather than an external component.

Actually JD calls one style a pump and the other style a valve but both contain valves. Does your tractor have one or 2 steering cylinders?

They need to be timed, and it makes a "big" difference if it's for a single cylinder or a dual,, the difference is in the thickness of the end chamber and the amount of displacement of the steer oil,,best bet is to swap it out..

Something was put together out of time. They will do that if not assembled properly. I would take it apart and try again paying close attention to the manual. The valve may not have been the original problem if it was not binding anywhere.

They are pricey,, Like Cliff suggested ,,give it another try , there are a couple "dots" in the gears to line up, and several ways that it can go together but only "one" way is correct,, becareful one of the wrong ways will make the steer wheel motor, and can grab your hand...

I remember the first one of those I had apart,, took me 3-4 times to get it back correctly,,Darn it,, and one of those trys the wheel spun like a wind mill...The vanes can get worn in them and it messes up,, that could be why yours started acting up to start with, that is why I suggested the swap out, I think they are $1500 through Deere, and when you look on E-bay they all look the same, but there are different models of them...
