Plastic guage sticking to crank 45 B

My plastic gauge is sticking to the crank, is this the way it works? It is measuring about.025 without removing the plastic. I think I need to add a shim to get it to.003,, This is my first time to use plastic gauge. I watch the video on you tube on how to use it and it comes off in the video for measurement. I can get a reading using the scale that comes with the gauge. I then scrap the plastic of the crank. How do you folks use it?

Yes, it will stick the the crank, some times I will put a film of oil on the crank to help it stay with the rod cap.

Hard to use on a 2 cyl. as you can usually not get to the rod nuts without turning the crank.
If you still have babbit bearings you just peel 1 of the .003 shims from each side and tighten. If it binds or gets tight add a .003 shim back in on each side and your good to go. keep the shim stacks even. Same on the mains.

Thanks Mike. I have been thinking about what you posted.
So far I have been getting some good info here.
I have only done one other Babbitt engine before and it was a easy. This one is making me pull my hair out.

Just a curious thought. if you put alittle oil on it. wouldn't that possibly change the reading. When your dealing with a couple thousandths of a inch i would think the oil might cause some tolerance misreads.. just me thinking out loud.

Yes that is a valid thought,,but a light film probably would not make a difference, and we are working with a low RPM engine also..

Do you have a copy of the JD factory service manual on the B ? It covers from 96,000 and up and is VERY well written and illustrated. If you don't have one I'd get one as it is a great manual with lots of service tips that apply to many other models too.

If you're worried about the oil film being too thick
you might use a little WD40 or other product.
I always just scraped it off with a finger nail.
