1020 Hydraulic Troubles

I posted a few days ago about this thinking maybe steering was bypassing but I've unhooked the pressure line going to the column and installed a pressure gauge. Thought I'd see if it worked with it unhooked and it still does the same thing. Meaning lift won't work unless you move a leaver that's goes to the break away couplings on the back. Once you move it the lift will work like it should but you have to move it every time for the lift to work or hold it all the way forward. Same as steering turn it one way or hold it and lift will work but right now steer is unhooked. Pressure reading ( stand by pressure) is around 2700 - 2900 at the line going to the steering column. Is this wright or a little high? Operates about 1400-1500 when you raise the lift. Any ideas on what might be the cause with the lift not working until you use something else hydraulic? Thanks for the help..!!

2250 psi is the factory setting for hyd stand-by pressure. Does your tractor have factory scv(rear remotes)? If your tractor has factory scv loosen the mounting bolts and remove this hose(parts key 4). With scv in neutral no oil should exit from hose barb in parts key 2 when engine is running. If oil exits fitting(parts key 2) poppet valves are leaking internally causing 3 pt problems. While you have hose off check inside hyd filler hole for spraying oil when 3 pt is raised completely and engine is running.

Yeah it has them and is leaking a small amount of fluid. The tractor has been sitting over night and didn't won't to raise at all
until it ran 5 or 6 minutes then operated fine like it should. Seemed like it didn't have and pressure going to it but the line
going to the steering was showing 2800 psi. Does the same main pressure line where the steering tees off go to the lift or is
it a different line that goes to it? Even when the lift started working there was the same amount of fluid coming out of the
line that comes out of the side of the valve for the rear remotes.

I meant to ask is there somewhere I can check the transmission pump pressure? I believe it's alright since the other line has
that much pressure.

Yes steering pressure is from same source so it's the same pressure. If it was my tractor I'd lower the stand-by pressure to 2250 psi. It's possible the pressure control valve down by hyd filter is momentarily blocking pressure.

I can't remember where the trans pump check port would be if not on trans shifter cover

Yes that matters as far as diagnostics are concerned. The supply tubes to both hyd functions have a history of leakage.

Try operating with hyd oil at operating temp. the 3 pt with pto on & off and hyd hi-lo in both speeds then report back your results.

Does tractor have a FEL?

Got it going! Turns out the problem was the too high pressure must have been making a valve pop off somewhere. I set it
about 2200 and everything has been working write so I let it set over night and tried again and everything seems to work
write now so thanks for the help. After I get everything done on this I've got a 2040 with open center Hydrolics that has a
problem blowing fluid out of the steering column. Tried replacing the o-rings 4 or 5 time and doesn't help anything. Thought
I might have cut one but not that many times and I know there in the write groove. I may have to pick your brain on that one.
Thanks again!!!

Thanks for update and I'm glad you got it operating correctly. As to the 2040 power steering my next guess would be a faulty power steering control valve causing the problem.

That's what I was afraid of. There hard to come buy around here with the open center Hydrolics. You know of another series
tractor that might have the same valves? Ive called several places with know luck.

It's also possible that one of the valve bodies is shimmed incorrectly.

The following tractors are the ones that utilize the open center valve body PN AR 55358

4114 - 820 Utility Tractor (North American Version) - 16May11
4132 - 830 Utility Tractor (North American Version) - 16May11
4150 - 2040 Utility Tractor ( -349999) - 16May11
4154 - 830, 930 Tractors (European Edition) - 12May11 ( FR DE IT ES SV )
4163 - 820, 920 Tractors - 12May11 ( FR DE IT ES SV )

Thanks for the info. Someone said they thought a 1530 was the same? I found one of those but in my shop manual it
doesn't look the same. Do you have any idea if those will work too?

(quoted from post at 15:47:42 03/30/15) Yeah lucky me I've got the odd ball!!!

The tail end of US 2040 production was closed center.
All European and Canadian 2040's were closed center.
